The Clamouse Cave

At the foot of the Sérane, in the department of Hérault, in Saint Jean de Fos, discover the Grotte de Clamouse. Only 30 minutes from the Domaine d’Anglas campsite, visiting the Grotto is a MUST during your holidays in the South of the France. It is close to the medieval village classified Grand Site de France of St Guilhem le Désert and the Devil’s Bridge. It is one of the most beautiful Caves of France and is also classified as a “scientific and picturesque” site by the Ministry of Ecology since 2005. A true National Inventory of Geological Heritage, it includes a succession of galleries: it is an exceptional site.

Admiring the concretions through the various galleries is a real pleasure for young and old.

Also nicknamed the “Cathedral of Time”, the Clamouse Cave began to be dug nearly 5 million years ago. It was discovered by man in 1945, during a drought in the Gorges de l’Hérault. At that time, no one had ever seen the waterfall dry. Except that summer when cavers discovered it. Access to the following was diverted and the visit can now be done in complete serenity. If you want to know the legend of the Grotto, it’s here.

Visit of the Clamouse Cave

Immerse yourself in an extraordinary journey during the visit of the Grotto. With friends, family and even with children, treat yourself to this unique moment in the bowels of the earth in Languedoc Roussillon. This internationally recognized site is a real magical journey!

Visiting the Clamouse Cave lasts about 1h30. Before crisscrossing the 900 meters of cavity, the visit begins with the screening of an attractive little film that tells you the geological history of Clamouse. Then, let yourself be embarked in the magic of the show by “Magnificat poème de Clamouse”. Then, start the tour by admiring the cave-dwelling animals of the cave. Through the many stairs, discover the richness of the many concretions. The shapes are varied: jellyfish, organ case, cemetery, draperies and even aragonite crystals and eccentrics. It’s exceptional! Let yourself be embarked during the visit to the underground river. The beauty, diversity, abundance and rarity of concretions of this Cathedral of Time are magical. Since 2010 a 100% LED lighting, respectful of the environment, stages the show for a stop out of time. Understanding, discovering and marveling are the key words of this excursion.

You want to discover the Grotto differently, than by the classic guided tour, let yourself be tempted by the Spéléopark! A new activity, fun, sporting and cultural. Two courses to choose from: emotion or sensation.

After the spectacular visit of the Grotte de Clamouse, in the center of the earth, treat yourself to a breath of fresh air. From the panoramic terrace of the Grotto, the view is sensational! Also take the opportunity to cool off under the Devil’s Bridge or to discover one of the most beautiful villages in France: St Guilhem le Désert.
